What I'm Reading..

As part of our English class, we were asked to write a short review about a book we are currently reading. At the moment, I'm reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling. The book is the fourth in its series, and centres around Harry Potter, a young wizard who attends Hogwarts School. In this book, Harry is in his fourth year at school, and is taking part in the Triwizard Tournament, the International Magical Tournament for wizards. I am really enjoying reading it, as it is very descriptive. Rowling describes the characters very well, and the book is a page turner. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good series to read.

2nd Work Experience

On Wednesday 6th January, we started our 2nd block of work experience, which will last 6 weeks. I am doing mine in Avoca, Rathcoole.

As this was our first day back after the Christmas holidays, it was quite a shock getting up at 7.30. My mam dropped me for 9, and I met with the manager, Katherine. She was very nice, and showed me where to put my bag and coat. I then was given the shop of wrapping the bageuettes and putting them out in the store.

I am working in the food hall area, which is quite busy. I had lots to do, like putting out stock and cleaning up. I have never had a job in this kind of environment, so it is good to get this experience. I alsoget two half hour breaks, which I definitely needed. I can have whatever food I want, for free, which is reallly nice :)

I finished at 4, and was quite tired when I got home. I suppose I wasn't used to doing much since the Christmas holidays! All the staff were very nice, and I am looking forward to next Wednesday.

Happy New Year

2016 has well and truly begun, and we are all settled back in school after our Christmas break. I really enjoyed the two weeks off, but it's hard to get used to getting up early for school. A lot happened before the holidays, so let me fill you in.

On Wednesday 9th December, all TY's went in to town to sell holly in aid of the ISPCC. We went in on the bus, and met up with the organiser, who gave us our stations and our holly badges to sell. We were outside Brown Thomas'. Grafton Street was very busy, and we sold a lot of badges. Afterwards, we went for lunch. I enjoyed the day, and it really got us in the Christmas spirit.

On Wednesday 16th December, we went to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre to see the musical Mary Poppins, We left just after the Carol Service in school, and arrived in the Docklands at around 12.30. We had some lunch and the musical started at 2. The production was straight from the West End, and it was brilliant. The cast were all amazing, and the music was great. I really enjoyed the day.

Even though we are in TY, we still had to do our Christmas Exams. They weren't that bad, as we didn't have that many. We finished on the Friday, before all the other years.

On Monday 21st December, the TY's went to Blanchardstown for ice skating. We had finished our exams, and were given this day as a treat. We went with Ms Leonard and Ms McMahon. We had time before the ice skating to get some Christmas shopping done, and to get some lunch. We were all quite nervous getting on the rink, but after a while we were fine. I really enjoyed ice skating, but unfortunately fell just before we got off. I had a few bruises but I still really enjoyed it :)

Afterwards, we were officially on our Christmas holidays! I really enjoyed the break, and of course Christmas :)

Last Day of Work Experience

Yesterday was the last day of our work experience. I had been working in Celbridge Credit Union, and really enjoyed it. The staff were so nice and helpful during my time here, and I decided to thank them by baking and giving them a card.

I would recommend anyone to do their work experience in the Credit Union, as I feel that I learnt a lot from working here. However, I don't think I would like to work in an office full time.

I already have my next work experience organised, which is in Avoca in Rathcoole. It will start after Christmas.I will be working in the food hall and bakery, and I am really looking forward to it.

Mater Hospital

Last week, I spent one week in the Mater Hospital, as part of work experience. I had organised it during the summer, and was really looking forward to it. I have always had an interest in working in healthcare when I am older, and I knew this week would help me to see what it is like.

On Monday 23rd Novemeber, I got the train to Drumcondra, and was at the hospital for 10.00am. I met with the co-ordinator, Sandra, and the other TY students. There were 8 other students on the programme, and we all got on really well. We first went to the classroom, and got our staff badges, folders, and coats. Sandra then showed us around the hospital, and we met with people like a Health Quality Officer and a Junior Doctor. At 1.00pm we went to the staff canteen for lunch. After lunch, we went to the Radiography Department. I found this really interesting.

Tuesday was an exciting day, as we were in theatre. We 'scrubbed in' and met with the surgeon. He told us that it was a minor surgery, which involved removing a cyst from a womans finger. The woman was placed under local anesthetic, and we watched the surgery. I found this interesting, but I don't think I would like to work in surgery.

Throughout the week, we visited the other departments like Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Psychiatry and Orthoptics. We also went to the Spinal Injury Ward and spoke to many of the nurses working there. The Mater is also the centre for heart and lung transplants in Ireland, and we got to visit this unit and speak to the transplant co-orinator.

We also visited A&E, and the nurses talked to us about their job. The paramedics showed us around the ambulance. We also spoke to an A&E consultant about his job and how he went in to it. We met with an anesthetist in the old surgery wing, and got to use our stethoscopes on the sim(simulation) man. She told us that she completed this TY programme, which made her want to study medicine.

On Friday, we were shown the mortuary. I didn't know what to expect, but David who works there was very nice. He showed us the room were the post mortems are carried out, and what his job involves. The week went very quickly, and soon it was time to leave. I loved my week, and really got to see what it is like to work in a hospital. I found Occupational therapy really interesting and I would love to work in this area in the future.

A Little Update..

It's been a while since I posted a blog post, so I thought I would update you! This year is going so quick, it feels like yesterday we were on our Halloween break.
November has been a quite month, so unfortunately we have had a lot of normal classes.. :( At least it's almost Christmas(Only 38 days..!)

Although this month has been quiet, meaning no trips, we are busy in other ways. We have all been busy with Mini Company, and most of the groups are in production and selling. Our Mini Company, Why Knot, is a clip that you can attach to any phone, to keep earphones untangled. Mr. Walsh is helping us to make it in the tech room, and we already have a few orders :)

In Home Ec, we have been busy making and decorating our Christmas cakes. We are also doing our Irish and History projects. We are almost finished our first block of Work Experience. I have enjoyed working in the Credit Union each Wednesday. Next week, I have a block week in the Mater Hospital, which I am really looking forward to :) I will finish up here.. stay tuned :)

Fun Walk 2015

On the 2nd of October 2015, we had our annual Fun Walk. This takes place at the end of Friendship Week, and involves each tutor group making up a dance and performing it in front of the school. As TY's, our colour was yellow, so we decided to make a dance about Snapchat. Our tutor, Ms. Farrell, helped us with the idea and got involved with the dance. We practiced lots of times throughout the week, to try to get the dance perfect :)

On the day of the Fun Walk, we were kind of nervous, but everything went really well. It was really fun, and what made it better was that we won!! This was my first time winning the Fun Walk, so that was good :) After every year danced, the TY's went to help at the crossings for the walk. Everyone was in a great mood, and thankfully no one got knocked down.. :)

Overall it was a great week and I think it helped us to bond as a class. Until next year, Fun Walk.... ;)
